Erykah Badu! Lil Wayne! J. Cole! The final Dreamville Festival is approaching with perhaps its strongest lineup ever. Afro and Lexi dive deep into what makes this North Carolina festival so special and why its conclusion marks the end of an era for the state's music scene.

This episode captures the genuine excitement surrounding Dreamville's last hurrah, with our hosts breaking down both festival days and highlighting must-see performances. When international visitors are flocking from as far as the UK just to experience J. Cole's vision one last time, you know something special is happening in Raleigh. The cultural impact of this festival extends far beyond music, creating an economic and social phenomenon that may never be replicated in North Carolina again.

The conversation shifts to Disney+'s revival of Marvel's Daredevil series, where Afro delivers an impassioned review of the show's emotional depth. The hosts explore how Disney has maintained the darkness that made the Netflix series so compelling, particularly praising the powerful third episode featuring Matt Murdock and The Punisher. For Marvel fans wondering if Disney can handle mature content, this discussion offers reassuring insight.

Between festival excitement and streaming recommendations, we get personal glimpses into our hosts' lives - from Afro's mushroom farming ventures and electrician aspirations to Lexi's educational journey. Their authentic banter creates that comfortable feeling of catching up with friends who share your cultural interests.

Speaker 1:

Thank you and welcome to another episode of the Carolina Taco Podcast. I'm Afro and I'm here with my co-host.

Speaker 2:

Lexi.

Speaker 1:

Good to see you guys again. Thank you for listening. We actually got a lot of people to listen to the last episode. Got about like 25. That's pretty cool. So thank you guys for that. And you know it's always good to see us doing well on TikTok and Instagram and YouTube and stuff with clips and all that stuff. So thank you. You guys know how we start these episodes off. See what we've been up to since we last talked and you know kind of just go from there, lexi, what you been up to, what's been going on.

Speaker 2:

I've been doing this boot camp. It's kicking my butt because it's Monday through Friday and it's like three hours each night, but right now I got like a 98, so I'm doing good. Then tomorrow I'm going to a concert.

Speaker 1:

And then next week is Dreamville.

Speaker 2:

I'm going to see Tyler. Tyler the Creator.

Speaker 1:

Is he in Atlanta?

Speaker 2:

No, he's in Charlotte. Oh shit, okay cool. I have a friend that went to go see him last night in Miami. He said it was really good, so I can't wait.

Speaker 1:

That's what's up. Cool, that's dope. Dreamville is next week. We're going to be talking about that a little bit. That line out came up and it looks really good. I've been working on my truck All new front suspension stuff, so been replacing that new brakes rotors, all that crap. Um, if you're gonna buy a car and it is below the year of 2010 or not, newish definitely recommend, uh, changing out those brake calibers because those bitches get stuck and it's frustrating so um, you know, definitely recommend that.

Speaker 1:

Uh, you know something always good to do and, um, you know, been working on the mushroom farm, drilling holes in the buckets, finding, sourcing out stuff instead of straw. I'm going on a route of using sawdust. Caught up a couple of local sawmills in the area able to get free sawdust as much as I want, so that's something that can cut costs a lot.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

I started talking to a, a, a company that makes grain spawn, the stuff that I need to grow the mushrooms, and ask them do they do affiliation and stuff? And they said not right now, but you know, if I send them my Instagram and YouTube they'll be able to promote all that stuff. And I really do like. I like the way they do things and, if I can find the name of it, shit I think it's called like fields, some shit fields and I lost it fields and what but um, fields and forests, that's what it Fields and what, yeah, but um, I've, oh, fields and forests, that's what it's called, and um, you, they have a thing.

Speaker 1:

So I went through North spore and they have this program for like companies and stuff, startups, and but you have to sign this contract and stuff like that, which I get it. You know you want people to make sure you get your money. I'm not the biggest fan of signing contracts and you're kind of locked in for three months, which.

Speaker 1:

I'm lying, and that's when you get the bulk discounts and stuff like that once you sign up for it, because other than that you'll be paying $30 a bag for a bag of, I don't know, Lion's Mane grain fond, which is not crazy. But with Field and Forest products you're able to, basically, the more bags you buy, the better discount that you get, and I love it that way. There's no type of contract, nothing like that. I give them a call. Their customer support is great. I know a lot of people won't understand this, but Lexi and I have both worked with their customer support and if I make a phone call to a place and that customer support is on point, I'm going back.

Speaker 2:

Next I'm going back, I'm going back.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, if I'm talking to you, I'm going back because of just the first call. That first call says a lot and they were very helpful, answered the questions that I had very responsive, and that was just great to hear. Do you know what I'm saying? So love that. So Field and Forest definitely will be sticking with them and they plan on expanding some stuff and all that shit.

Speaker 1:

So working on the mushroom stuff, just doing a lot of calculating in the head. What else? And I'm looking for work. You know I had a couple of interviews last week. Electrician no, we didn't talk about this. Um went to like a electrician, um apprenticeship meeting and gonna uh studying for a electrician test or a test like a comprehension test, and all that stuff at the end of april that I'm taking um, which is cool, pretty good program.

Speaker 1:

You know you get paid to do it and you know it seems like once you're in there and you're really dedicated. Honestly, everything is on like campus and I haven't been on a college campus in years.

Speaker 2:

I was like I went there for a meeting.

Speaker 1:

I was like, oh my God, I have not been on a campus in a very long time.

Speaker 2:

And I was like it's cold in here.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, this is a college campus Cold as fuck. Oh, you know that was cool, but yeah, that's what I have been up to lately, so let's just get right into it. First, let's talk about this Dreamville Festival lineup. This shit is this. So let's be clear this is happening next week.

Speaker 2:

It is the last one.

Speaker 1:

it is the last one it's the last one right and god damn for the last one.

Speaker 2:

This lineup is pretty good look, this lineup for the old is. I'm sorry, if you like, ingrid, you just might want to like reconsider, okay, because yeah this is definitely for the old heads. If you have not looked at that lineup, definitely look at it. But yeah, this is the last one. This is my second one and so this year's lineup, we're going to bring up the lineup because it's so many people on it.

Speaker 1:

It's, it's crazy.

Speaker 2:

It's alright. So starting Saturday you guys we have Lil Wayne With the Hot Boys and the Big Thomas. So, like I already told, like the people that I'm going with that, like when they come on we might hit like two songs or whatever, and then we dip in because the walk back to the car is like a mile. It's a mile track from the parking lot to the field and from the field to the parking lot. Okay, so I'm gonna take advantage of that time. While everybody's in there, like you know, backing up for the 99 in the 2000, I'm gonna walk my ass to the car, okay, um, but then you have 21 savage. I saw him last year in june. So I'm like I'm excited, but I'm not excited because I know how he is and he really doesn't necessarily have like the greatest stage presence.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, um, and then party next door. I love me some like party next door, even though he's a knockoff weekend, but I still love party next door, I don't care what anybody says. Um, so I am excited about that because that'll be the first time I've seen him live. Um, then we got little chris. Uh, well, lowest, he plays splash waterfalls. I'm good, I don't care about nothing else. I didn't hear him play splash waterfalls. Um, yeah, all right, so she's probably. I don't care about nothing else, I just need him to play Splash Waterfalls. Alright, so she's probably back.

Speaker 2:

I don't think she was there last year. She's there this year though. Yeah, and then we got Chief Keef. See, it might be a little bit different Chief.

Speaker 1:

Here's the thing I've been seeing interviews with Chief Keef recently.

Speaker 2:

He looks way different now we're gonna see how that works okay I'm not I feel like he's gonna be in the afternoon and late because, like at the top, it's like your headliners and then like, so that's like around like eight, nine o'clock.

Speaker 1:

Right.

Speaker 2:

And so it goes down from there. So like, if you look at cheap keep, you probably be like that three, four o'clock set. I don't know if I'm going to catch that, but I do have a teacher call, which, okay, you know me and my friends already talked about that. Like we only know, one teacher calls us.

Speaker 1:

So um, you know it's crazy. I find it kind of weird that he has ab soul kind of low on that list a little bit, a little bit. I mean his name is there, but it's kind of weird that he has Abso a little bit on that list.

Speaker 2:

Man, that's interesting to me yeah, it was interesting to me too, um, and he has like everybody else, like boss I'm, he's okay, you know, um, and then your old man, he's okay too. So Saturday is gonna be probably like it's gonna be. It's not gonna be that chill day, but it's gonna be like hey, cool, got some hitters, and then we got sunday. Now sunday's all the heavy hitters all right, can I, can I?

Speaker 1:

I'm not, I'm not going right but I am look, sunday is going to be my eyes. My eyes are green. It's going to be bag lady nigga, it's going to get mama, get your gun. It's going to be southern girl, it's going it's going to be fucking crazy like, and I hope she does deep cuts because if she does, I'll make sure I record and send it to you I hope she does deep cuts. Man j cole, of course, erica badu tims. Is she a british artist?

Speaker 2:

yes, she is. She's from the uk, um, which is probably gonna go crazy.

Speaker 1:

Jid wale jones big x, the plug is probably gonna go crazy. Jid wale cogo jones big x, the plug is probably gonna go crazy too. I'm a fan of big x the plug.

Speaker 2:

I am a big fan of big x, the plug too. Only reason I found this funny is because so he's doing dreamville this weekend and then next week he's doing a festival here in clemson yeah, and. And I'm just like, I'm looking like I looked at the roster for the Clemson show and I'm just like why the fuck they got big ass to plug Because this, this, this, they don't go together. It's like what are we doing? So?

Speaker 1:

yeah, it's gonna be good If you. It's just giving you kind of like a rounded out, you know everything. If you don't want to go saturday, hey, sunday's gonna be the fucking vibes. You know what I mean. It's gonna. It's gonna be vibey as shit, for real. It's gonna be nice. Hopefully she's on time don't say that.

Speaker 2:

Don't say that because nik Nikki last year was late as fuck. What I mean late? This bitch was an hour and a half late to her own fucking set and I was going to watch her, right, because one of my like my supervisor, I love Nikki, right. So I was like, yeah, okay, cool, I'll get you, like some pictures. And like no, she was an hour and a half late and I wasn't trying to miss the J Cole set, so I didn't.

Speaker 2:

So I didn't get no pictures but like, let's hope she's on time. But I really want to see Earthgang because I missed him last year, so I want to see Earthgang this year okay, I will say I want to get honestly.

Speaker 1:

I want to give J Cole a lot of props for this. He did something in North Carolina that I don't think ever been done. I'm not from North Carolina, just went to college here and just ended up staying. But he did something that I never thought would happen. He made I mean, we have festivals and stuff in raleigh, all that shit, hopscotch and everything like that that happens. But hopscotch, like dreamville, is one of the biggest festivals, probably in the state of north carolina, probably next to ci double a, and ci double a is not even a festival, it's just a fucking basketball tournament, right. So gotta give props for him for doing it at Dorothy Dixie Park yes, doing it with basically not the biggest park in the world, very congested, but that shit runs. It runs smoothly, as from what I heard, because my sister has been it's smooth-ish, it's not smooth.

Speaker 2:

So the stage will always have audio issues just because of what the the area is set up. So that's always a problem with audio. There it is, it's big, but I feel like it's not big enough with audio there. It's big, but I feel like it's not big enough for a festival that size.

Speaker 1:

Right.

Speaker 2:

And yet he really did put y'all on the map for festivals with Dreamville, because there's so many people coming out. So I'm in the Dreamville group, right? So there's people telling me I'm coming from Texas.

Speaker 1:

There's one was coming from the uk, like california, like all over, just to go to dreamville here's the thing that is good and bad about this this is the last one and you kind of have to sit here and think it's. I don't want to say that because I don't know, but it's probably not going to be something like this ever again, with this like magnitude, yeah, of people coming in one, like coming in one place listening to music like this in the state of north carolina. This shit is this. This is the a place where people usually do like a lot of concerts and stuff is like pnc arena and you know other places here.

Speaker 2:

This is probably, like I said, the biggest shit that north carolina probably has and it's probably not going to be anything like this, yeah, but they're I mean, they've already been talking about like what can be that possible replacement for a dreamville already and it hasn't even like finished, you know, because we saw this last year. But yeah, I don't think whatever they plan, I don't think is going to be as big as Dreamville.

Speaker 1:

It's not going to work because Cole's name is not going to be on it. Right, Cole's name was the credibility and the artist. You can't pull artists like Lil Wayne, Erykah Badu Think about that for a minute. You're not pulling artists like Erykah Badu and Lil Wayne off of just like nothing.

Speaker 2:

True.

Speaker 1:

This is coming off of Cole's name, so it's like you know, I don't know I don't know.

Speaker 2:

I don't know what you guys are going to do in replacement of that. But, like I don't know, now I have to find my like next festival that I want to go to. So, uh, that's like the one downside about it. There's no more dreamville out there. This is the last fucking one. That's why I'm taking my best friend with me. He loves Dray Cole so he'll be with me. Once we get done with that, I'm also going to take him to Forest Hill Drive so he can see the house, or whatever. You're taking him to Fayetteville. Yep, mm-hmm, what's up with that?

Speaker 1:

Woo Take your gun with you. God damn Jesus Christ. What's up with that shit? You know they call that shit Fayetteville for a reason right.

Speaker 2:

I know I've heard, but I want him to see, the house want him. He's like.

Speaker 1:

I want to see the house so all right, you got a good hour drive yeah, I know um, so yeah, man, this is gonna be good for for the last, like like hurrah and all that shit this is a good lineup. Hope it goes well. You know, last year Props to him for starting it and keeping that shit going for has it been five years? Yeah, five years. Props to him For sure. So this is something I want to talk about and I don't know if you watched have you watched the daredevil series no shit, I can't talk about it, you can go ahead because I'm not going to watch it this shit is fire.

Speaker 1:

I thought this shit. I thought Disney was going to take this shit and fuck it up. Daredevil is dark when it was on Netflix very dark and eerie and shit and they, they kept that shit. They kept it really well, thank god for that. I thought they were gonna take this shit and do what they did to like the star wars shit and all that crap, all the series that they made and all that shit. Thank god they didn't. I will say I'm mostly gonna talk because actually the new episode comes out tonight. It should be out already.

Speaker 1:

But that last episode, episode three you know it's just three episodes so far, but I'm going to say that is the best fucking episode of the series, like right now, because we see Matt Murdock and the Punisher actually meet in. This was seeing matt murdoch let out all his fucking emotion about his friend foggy dying, getting killed, all this emotion coming out of him and the only person in this whole damn show that he could talk to about this shit was the punisher. That's the crazy shit. As soon as I watched that episode, I was sitting on my couch and I said that's crazy. The punisher, that's the crazy shit. As soon as I watched that episode. I was sitting on my couch and I said that's crazy. The Punisher is the only motherfucker that he can talk to about this, because the Punisher understands what the fuck he's feeling. Man I was talking to. I was at the range working and I was talking to the manager and he was like I was like yo, did you see that latest Daredevil? He was like I was like yo, did you see that latest Daredevil? He was like man. He was like man. That shit was that shit was powerful man. That shit was good. Like that shit was really good.

Speaker 1:

I love when good shit like that comes together. I love seeing two actors that actually like playing their characters and you see that like. I've seen clips. I forgot what the dude's name is who actually plays daredevil, but I see him at conventions. People bring him stuff, make you know the daredevil helmet and everything like that, and he appreciates it, he loves it. He loves like the just the. I don't know the interaction with fans and stuff like that. It's so fucking great to see that like. It's amazing. This series is good to me. If you don't like it, then you don't like it. But this shit, that last episode fucking great.

Speaker 1:

I know foggy passed away. He died, but fuck, I think her name is katherine their secretary that worked at the uh law office. Fuck her because she couldn't even speak, because because matt is going through all this shit and she's going through shit but they can't like, like it's something blocking them and they can't talk to each other and she's on some other. She's not even in the same state anymore. She left and it's just, man, it's great seeing him and Punisher being like, punisher, being his way, not like all you know.

Speaker 1:

Man, I'm sorry that the friend died. He's like so were you able to save your fucking friend? Huh, you want me, literally. So. Were you able to save your fucking friend? Huh, literally, you weren't able to save him, were you? Yeah, do you think about him when you close your eyes? Yeah, because I do the same thing when it comes to my kids and my wife. That shit was man. That shit was great. That shit was so great. I'm happy that they, that they did that. It's great. So if you're not watching that series, please watch it. It's good. You know, the more people that watch it. This shows that you know disney is actually doing something right and not going on this fucking beaten path of bullshit.

Speaker 2:

Shit.

Speaker 1:

Like I actually watched Acolyte Not a fan, you know, I watched the Mandalorian. Of course I watched Andor. Andor was actually okay, but I don't know, man, it's whatever I watch. You know my shit is mostly just YouTube stuff. So you know, man, it's whatever I watch. You know my shit is mostly just YouTube stuff, so you know it's so it's uh. Yeah, I'm mostly just kind of yeah, if they were to, if Disney were to bring the defenders to Disney Luke Cage, iron Fist, jessica Jones and Daredevil, all of those shows.

Speaker 1:

I know a lot of people don't like Iron Fist, but compared to the shit that we've seen from Disney, iron Fist was fucking great. I mean, let's keep it real. Iron Fist was dope. I mean I'm not even going, I'm not gonna hold you. It was, it was better than what we got from disney now. So if they keep that dark type of uh, that dark atmosphere to it, yeah, it'll do. It'll do great. They bring back luke cage and I had my thoughts about luke cage season two. I don't think it was that good. Luke Cage season one was great. It was great, it was good. That was good.

Speaker 2:

I really liked that Season two was fun.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

I wanted to finish it.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it wasn't it wasn't, you weren't missing shit Like season one, was just like cotton mouth and was just like cotton mouth and just it was great. It was good. Season two I didn't give a fuck about um. I forgot who the villain was. He was some Jamaican dude. Oh I forgot what his name was. Fuck, what was his name? I forgot what his name was, but whatever. But yeah, like daredevil, it's on point. All they can do is just carry on with it. The person that played I might get his name wrong white tiger.

Speaker 1:

The person that played him actually passed away I want to say maybe like a year or two ago, and I hope they carry that somewhere else in a direction that's good, because I would love to see more of that character. I was reading and it looks like the whole family is able to get that power based off that amulet that he wears, so I would love to see them go somewhere with that too.

Speaker 2:

Wait, hold on. So you know. The guy that played Luke Cage is from our area, right?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, he's from South Carolina.

Speaker 2:

He's related to um what's his name. He's also related to Le Davis.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, so um yeah, but if they were to bring back those shows, that'd so um yeah, but if they were to bring back those shows, that would be great. Just don't fuck it up, that's all, I ask. Just don't fuck it up, I mean that's all. But yeah, I mean shit. You know, we, uh, we keeping this one short, y'all. Um, you know, keeping it short, keeping it simple, uh, is there anything else that you want to add?

Speaker 2:

I'm tired, I'm tired.

Speaker 1:

She's tired. Look, we're going to. We're going to wrap it up on that. Uh, thank you guys for watching and, you know, give us a listen, follow us on socials. We're on tiktok, instagram, facebook at carolina otakus and, yeah, we will see you, guys when we see you. And thanks for listening bye guys.
